Many small actions add up to big change, and it will take a dedicated “green army” to help end deforestation and plant a future. Every day, every person can choose to make a difference. All it takes is a little focus on how you can reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink and, of course, replant. There’s an old saying: if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Take action!

“Of all the places WWF works, the rate of destruction in Borneo and Sumatra defies the imagination. Devising a solution equal to the weight of humanity’s pressure on this rich place will take persistence, creativity and collaboration. We are grateful for the support and leadership of partners like Avon who realize we all have an important role to play in meeting this challenge.”

"With support from Avon, The Nature Conservancy has made significant progress in restoring Brazil's Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered and biologically diverse forests in the world. The Atlantic Forest is home to tens of thousands of plant and animal species - many found nowhere else on Earth – and it is the source of drinking water for 70 percent of Brazil's population. It is critical that we save the Atlantic Forest for both people and nature."

Many drying racks can hold a full washing load of socks, shirts, shorts, pants, and more. These items will dry quickly in the open air after they’ve gone through the washing machine’s spin cycle. Hanging blouses, dresses, and jackets on hangers, rather than tossing them in the dryer, will extend their life and ensure they don’t shrink.

If you're celebrating Christmas, plant a live Christmas tree this year. Many varieties of trees sold for the Christmas holidays make wonderful permanent additions to a landscape. Plan ahead by researching an evergreen tree that will thrive in your yard; your local nursery or native plant society can provide several suggestions. Dig the hole before the ground freezes; you can cover the hole with a wood plank or fill it in with loose compost until planting time. About a week before Christmas, buy a live tree with the roots wrapped in burlap. Keep the tree cool and well-watered while it’s in the house; shortly after Christmas, replant the tree outside in the prepared hole. Water on days when the temperature is above freezing. Enjoy the tree year after year.

Start shopping the sales now for the highly energy efficient holiday lights made with LED technology. LEDs use even less energy than compact fluorescents, and LED bulbs are more durable than the standard twinkly lights you might otherwise buy to give your holidays some sparkle. You can find all white LEDs as well as strands of colored bulbs; they work as well indoors as out.

We’re now used to buying paper made from recycled or “post consumer” waste. But why stop there? Buying goods made from recycled materials completes the cycle, keeping materials out of the landfill, saving energy and water, and helping to reduce consumption. Take a look at some of the many items now made from recycled materials. If the conventional version is on your shopping list, why not switch to recycled?
You can choose from: computers and cell phones made from recycled plastic, construction materials like porch decking, clothing and shopping bags made from recycled soda bottles, insulation made from recycled blue jeans, playground equipment fashioned from recycled tires, purses, briefcases and messenger bags made from recycled tires and reclaimed aluminum can tops, and shoes made from recycled rubber.
